How to Get from San Salvador Airport to El Tunco and El Zonte
El Tunco is about 45 km from San Salvador airport (SAL), around one hour by car along the coastal highway. El Zonte is about 15 minutes further west, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from the airport. Most travelers go by Uber, airport taxi or a private transfer booked ahead.

Many people call it San Salvador airport, but SAL is not in the capital. It sits near the coast, so the surf beaches west of La Libertad are about as close to the airport as the capital is.

The route from San Salvador airport to El Tunco
From SAL, the drive follows the Carretera del Litoral (CA-2) west to Puerto de La Libertad, then along the coast to El Tunco and El Sunzal. El Zonte is further along the same road, past the cliffs. Weekend traffic around La Libertad can add a few minutes.
| From SAL to | Distance | Drive time |

| El Zonte | ~60 km | ~1 hr 15 |
Uber, airport taxi or private transfer
Uber
Uber picks up at SAL, and you can order the ride once you’re outside the terminal. The price changes with demand and the time of day. The cars are regular sedans, so check that your bags fit, and don’t count on carrying surfboards.
Airport taxi
Taxis wait at the arrivals exit. Agree on the fare to El Tunco or El Zonte before you get in, because the price isn’t fixed in advance.
Private transfer
A private transfer from San Salvador airport to El Tunco has a fixed price per vehicle, one way, tolls included, and surfboards travel free. Your driver tracks the flight and waits with a name sign.
Arriving late at night
We run airport transfers 24/7 at the same price at any hour, and if your flight is delayed, we move the pickup time.
Public bus
The bus is the cheapest way to get from San Salvador airport to El Tunco, at roughly $2 to $4 per person, but it takes three buses and a change on a highway overpass:
| Leg | Bus | Where to get on and off | Fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport to Puente Comalapa | Route 138 (regular service) | Catch it on the main highway in front of the airport and get off at Puente Comalapa, the overpass on the Comalapa highway. | $0.65 |
| Puente Comalapa to Puerto de La Libertad | Route 166 or 540 | You get off below the bridge. Climb the pedestrian stairs to the Carretera del Litoral and wait on the westbound side, toward La Libertad. Get off at the terminal in the center of Puerto de La Libertad. | $1.00 to $1.50 |
| La Libertad to El Tunco or El Zonte | Route 102-A or Route 80 | Board on the highway in La Libertad and tell the fare collector you’re getting off at the El Tunco entrance, about 15 minutes away, or stay on for El Zonte. | $0.50 to $1.50 |
For the last leg, Route 102-A is the better choice. It runs minibuses from San Salvador to El Zonte, and they’re faster and more comfortable than the big buses, most of them with air conditioning. At Puente Comalapa, Routes 166 and 540 can take 20 to 40 minutes to come by. Routes and fares change from time to time, so ask the driver before you board. With a big suitcase, surfboards or after dark, this trip gets hard, and an Uber or a transfer makes more sense.
Traveling with surfboards
Surfboards are where Uber and taxis get difficult. With us, board bags ride free. Tell us how many boards you’re bringing when you book, and we send a vehicle they fit in. A group with several board bags usually needs the HiAce.
Where drivers drop you off
A private transfer takes you to the door of your accommodation, not to a bus stop on the highway. In El Tunco that includes hotels on the main strip, such as Roca Sunzal and Hotel Zelen, beachfront stays in El Sunzal like Casa de Mar and Zen Hotel, and villas toward Boca Olas. In El Zonte, drivers go to places like Palo Verde, Puro Surf Hotel and Garten Hotel, and up the steep driveways of the clifftop villas. For things to do once you arrive, see El Salvador’s official tourism site.

Getting back to the airport
The ride back from El Tunco or El Zonte costs the same as the ride from San Salvador airport to El Tunco or El Zonte. For an international flight, plan your pickup about 3 to 3.5 hours before departure.
