El Salvador Airport Arrival Guide: Immigration, Taxi, Uber or Private Transfer

El Salvador’s international airport is Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL), near the Pacific coast and about 50 minutes by car from San Salvador. Most travelers get through immigration and baggage claim in 20 to 40 minutes. Outside, you can take a taxi, order an Uber or meet a driver you booked in advance.

El Salvador airport arrival at the SAL terminal

This El Salvador airport arrival guide covers each step, from the plane to your hotel, and how to choose a ride.

Before you land

  • El Salvador stopped charging the $12 tourist card in 2025, so you don’t need cash at immigration.
  • Entry rules depend on your passport. Check them with your airline or with El Salvador’s migration authority before you fly.
  • The currency is the US dollar, so travelers from the US don’t need to change money.
  • Keep your hotel’s name and address on your phone. Any driver will ask for it.

Immigration and baggage: 20 to 40 minutes

On an El Salvador airport arrival, you leave the plane and follow the signs to immigration, then to baggage claim and customs. On a normal day this takes 20 to 40 minutes. It can take longer when several flights from the US land close together, so leave some margin if someone is waiting for you.

Leaving the terminal

The last step of an El Salvador airport arrival is the exit. After customs, the arrivals exit takes you outside, where drivers and families wait. If you booked a transfer, this is where your driver stands with a sign showing your name.

Your ride options from SAL

Airport taxi

Taxis wait outside the arrivals exit. The fare isn’t fixed in advance, so agree on the price with the driver before you load your bags.

Uber

Uber works at SAL. You order the ride in the app once you’re outside and meet the driver at the pickup point the app shows. The fare changes with demand and the time of day, and you see the estimate before you confirm. Uber cars are regular sedans, so a group of five or several surfboards may not fit in one car.

Private transfer booked in advance

A private transfer has a price agreed before you travel, and the driver is waiting when you come out. With our El Salvador airport transfers, the price is per vehicle, one way, with tolls included. We track your flight, and you get 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. A few examples, Nissan Rogue (up to 2) / Toyota HiAce (up to 8):

San Salvador (Zona Rosa)~50 min from SAL
$55 / $75
El Tunco~1 hr from SAL

Costa del Sol~50 min from SAL

Lake Coatepeque~1 hr 45 from SAL

Online bookings need at least 24 hours’ notice.

Which option fits your trip

For most El Salvador airport arrivals, the choice is simple. If you travel light, arrive during the day and are going to San Salvador, Uber works fine. A private transfer makes more sense for a family or a group, for luggage and surfboards, for a late-night arrival, or for long drives to the beaches and the mountains, where an app ride can be hard to find for the trip back.

For international flights, plan your pickup about 3 to 3.5 hours before departure if you’re staying in San Salvador, 4 to 4.5 hours from Lake Coatepeque or Santa Ana, and 5 hours from Ruta de las Flores. A return transfer with us costs the same as the arrival.
